Pass Flow-Balancing

Balancing the pass outlet temperatures of fired heaters aids heater operation by:

• Reducing coking in the tubes
• Decreasing fuel consumption
• Increasing furnace throughput

In pass balancing, the objectives are to keep the pass:

• Outlet temperatures balanced
• Flow rates within limits
• Valves within limits
• Flow, as a percent of average flow, within limits

Fired heaters that have parallel passes should have equal distribution of the charge flow among the passes to get equal pass outlet temperatures. This is approached in three ways:

• Symmetrical piping
• Pass balancing with flow/temperature controllers
• Pass balancing with manual trim valves
